SONY will not help because it is out of warranty. There is a small board taped to the bottom of the screen and I am assuming this is an inverter. If not, this is not the video cable failure. Replace the LCD with a new one. Lorin, Your description sounds more like the LCD screen failure to me. Would you agree with this? I pointed these cables with two red arrows.

Not sure what you are talking vqio. If the test backligth lights up, you have a faulty backlight lamp inside your screen. The display harness routed though the left hinges. Both have very soby failure symptoms — very dark image and no backlight. I have removed the plugs and screws at the top of the screen, however am reluctant to remove the bottom part since I am afraid of hidden screws.

Otherwise laptop works fine and displays sony vaio vgn-sz43gn top as usual. I used to treat the laptop really rough.
